S&P: Emerging Markets Issuers Stay Junk-Rated

The number of speculative-grade-rated companies in the emerging markets increased to 54% of the total, not too far from the 66.5% it reached in 2001, according to a report published by Standard & Poor’s Thursday.
The count of speculative-grade emerging markets companies increased to 601 through the second quarter of 2010, according to S&P, which had ratings on 1,105 emerging market entities. Emerging markets companies account for 19.4% of the global pool of issuers.
In the junk-rated category, emerging markets companies rated B increased by 14% but issuers rated BB and CCC lower dropped by 4%.
Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa credits comprised 37% of the emerging markets companies, Latin American companies accounted for 36% and companies in the Asia-Pacific Islander region accounted for 28%.
